In the South of Portaria, the traditional "hidden" village Katichori is located, built in a gully with rich vegetation and running waters.
It is the homeland of several industrialists, such Nicolaos Matsagou who owned the famous "Factory of Cigarettes of the N. Matsagou Bros". in Volos and Georgios Papageorgiou who together with his brothers founded one of the biggest factories in Greece in early 20th. century, the "Textile industry of the St. Papageorgiou Bros". Also in Volos.
Several festivals take place in the village at regular intervals. The most famous is the "Festival of Tsipouro", which takes place in late June and the visitor has the chance to watch the traditional process of the production of tsipouro and also to taste it.
The patron saints of Katichori are Saints Apostoles, that are celebrated with a traditional feast in late June. Other feasts that take place in the area are the one of Panagia Megalogenous on August 20th. and of Agia Paraskevi on July 26th.
In Katickori, there is also the head office of the Society of Humanistic Research, the aim of which pertains to its operation as a place of discussion and research, with representatives of various scientific fields and as a point that seminars, conferences and international events take place during the summer months as well as cultural events.
In the area the visitor can stay in guest rooms and rooms to let as well as taste traditional delicacies in taverns and "tsipouradika", which offer to the patrons local wine and tsipouro.
