After Portaria, the central road goes up markedly with many bends, that nevertheless offer a magnificent view of Volos and Pagasitikos gulf as well as of the mountain summits of Pelion. If you are lucky enough to see them snowed, you will understand what we mean. The road by-passes from the north side the mountain slope “Alkopetra”, and crosses Chania. Chania are located at an altutide of 1200m., very close to the ski resort and the pass of Stavros, at a distance of 27km from Volos and just 13km from Portaria.
As it is obvious by the name of the area, here there was not ever a village, but a few "chania" (i.e. a type of lodging) that were visited by passerby merchants who carried their commodities from the villages of East Pelion to Volos, and vice versa.
Over the years, Chania became privileged since at the neighbouring mountain summit "Agriolefkes" (1470m.) was built the ski resort, resulting in the increase of tourism in the area.
Nowadays, Chania owe their development to the neighbouring ski resort. Although, the village is also chosen in itself as a place of accommodation. Here you can find many taverns with local food, shops with traditional sweats (preserved fruits in syrup) and souvenirs as well as many choices of accommodation, such as rooms to let and hotels.
