Agios Georgios Nilias is a beautiful picturesque village, 20km east from Volos, between Agios Vlasios and Pinakates. It is built in a amphitheatre way on two ridges, protected by the north winds, with three gullies furrowing it, surrounded by a green landscape and with a view at the Pagasitikos Gulf.
At the central square, next to the road, there is the church of Agios Georgios, built more recently, in 1980, replacing the older church that was destroyed in the earthquake of 1955. Many stone reliefs from the decoration of the old church were incorporated on the exterior walls of the new church. In front of the church at the central square, a monument was erected in 1990, created by the local sculptor Nicola (Pavlopoulos).
One can find more works of art of the aforementioned sculptor in the manor house of the square, where the Museum of the sculptor Nicola is housed since 1992 (open from May until November, tel.: +30 24280 93100).
As regards the tourist attractions of the village, it could be said that in the past Agios Georgios was less touristic compared to Vizitsa and Milies. In recent years, however, and due to the remarkable efforts of local people in this field, Agios Georgios has acquired glamour and vividness, and it has been one of the most popular destinations of the East Pelion, characterized by the necessary infrastructure for the accommodation of its visitors.
During your stay or visit in Agios Georgios, it is worth going down the road to Agios Vlasios, and visiting the Monastery of Taxiarches. The exact date of the Monastery’s foundation is not known (there is a survived date - 1764 – over the door of the church, but the Monastery is believed to be older) as well as the creator of its marvelous carved in wood, gold-plated iconostasis and of the beautiful interior religious paintings. In 1976, it was converted into a nunnery.
