The picturesque village Syki is located 38km far from Volos, through the road that leads to the northeast Pelion, in a magnificent place with a view of North Sporades (i.e. Skopelos, Skiathos, Alonissos) and the deep blue of the Aegean Sea.
The old name of Syki was Ski, originating not from the winter sport of the same name, but probably from the arvanite word "skie" (which means slaves).
Do not be misled by the short name of the village. Despite the fact that it is a less known one compared to other villages of Pelion, Syki has a long history and witnessed many hardships and misfortunes. The village was pillaged by the Turkish in 1823, devastated for some time, but the love and willingness of its residents kept the village, which was rebuilt, vibrant.
The visitors of the village are welcomed by the chapel of Prophet Elias, which is located there for many years with a magnificent view of the sea.
When we talk about Pelion sea, we refer to beautiful beaches, some of which are located very close to Syki, such as Potoki and Pantazi Sand.
The reference points of Syki are its central square and the church of Agios Georgios (1939–1940), as well as the neighbouring Convent of Timios Prodromos (1795), built by Dimos Zipaniotis with funds provided by the armatole of Pelion, Stergios Basdekis.
In 1840, the Convent was rebuilt by the monk Damaskinos.
In the middle of the previous century, the Convent was abandoned, but a few years ago twelve nuns from the Convent of Agios Stefanos in Meteora revived it.
